Taiwan Delicious Mountain Cuisine Baolai Koahsiung 高雄寶來美食


This is one of the most delicious food in the mountain Boalai which is located northern part of Kaohsiung. Around this area there are many hotspring, we fail to visit one due to my partner exhaustion from lack of sleep.

高雄婆婆冰 PoPo Ice

One of the old ice shop in Kaohsiung, along the same street apparently there are 3 shops with the same name. We have tried all three shop and found the original shop (photo above) is better. 

There are 2 kinds of ice to choose from, crushed ice and snow ice (milk ice). So far we prefer the crush ice mixed fruit as it topped with their in-house secret recipe. Snow ice would be better with strawberries or mango depending on season.

興達港 Xing Da Port Seafood Mart

Located in Kaohsiung, it takes about an hour to get here from Kaohsiung City. Opens only in the evening, it host a varieties of seafood. The fresh seafood here are very reasonably priced and value for money. There are also rows of finger food to try out.

大知本焢肉飯店 Da Zhiben Braised Pork Belly Restaurant


Popular with local and tourist, this braised pork belly and trotter rice simply melts in your mouth. We took our friend's to try it out and they too agree this is simply the best. Pricing is very reasonable, for a set meal is around NT70 with 4 vegetables and a meat. 

Most of the ingredients are from Taitung, the meat is from Taitung's black pig and the bamboo shoot, vegetables are also from the local produce. Hence most of the dishes here are very fresh. The shop started decades ago and the urn pot have not seen the sink since then. 

Earthen Jar Oven Roast Chicken 甕窯雞

This is the best roasted chicken we have tasted. The chicken is roasted to perfection and marinated with garlic and other spices. The texture of the chicken meat just melts in your mouth with an aromatic flavour.

Ever since the last visit, we have been back couple of times when we are doing round island trip. This is a definitely a must stop over for us.

Huimei Japanese Food 惠美壽亭



We were searching for a Japanese meal and happen to chance this shop. We decided to pop in for a meal until we were met with a different kind of atmosphere. For a while I felt I was back in Japan. Most of the diners here were Japanese and even the menu was in Japanese. Of course I can't read Jap so I got the owner to introduce us their speciality. There are many Japanese restaurant in Taiwan but this is one of the best traditional Japanese meal I tasted.

This is an open air restaurant located in NanZhuang Township on a mountain around 900mtrs above sea-level. The restaurant is being run by Aboriginal people living around the area. The idea of coming here was to taste Mountain Trout.

旗哥牛肉湯 Qige Beef Soup

Tainan is popular will their beef soup, Qige Beef Soup is one of the many in Tainan. All their beef are from Taiwan fresh cut of the day. The beef are not cook but simply  scoured over with beef broth to get the pinkish, soft texture.

Beside beef soup dishes, they have stirred fry vegetables with beef organs or just simply stirred fry beef organs. Overall the taste was to our satisfaction and we highly recommended.

If you are driving along the east coast, you got to stop by this joint for a hot bun. They have various version of hot bun, red bean, pork, bamboo shoot, salted veg. etc. I preferred the pork bun.

I love soybean curd, first time I tried Taiwan's cold soybean curd was on a bike ride with the club from Kaohsiung to Tainan. Ever since then, if we pass by this area we would stop by for a cold soybean curd treat. I must say it is one of the best soybean curd we had. There are 2 shops located side by side. One selling the white version soybean curd while the other the black soybean curd. We prefer the black version which is smoother and tastier.
