On Boxing Day, the family has decided to joined Kaohsiung Mountaineering Group for this trip. For the price of NT500 per person is worth every penny. It includes lunch (fried noodle, Kimchi and white reddish soup), insurance and transport from Kaohsiung City to Taichung. However you will need to drag yourself out from bed at 4.30am just to catch the 5.40am coach which only picks up at 3 locations.

3 coaches from Kaohsiung City arrived at a temple in 東卯山 Dongmao Shan, Taichung at around 9am and we started scaling the mountain at around 9.20am. There is a small road that heads to the trail head, due to the coach size and the road condition,we ended up hiking another 1.1Km to the trail head.

The trip was worth it and was rewarded with a spectacular view of "sea of clouds" around the mountain area, this was probably due to the cold spell. The journey up can be very taxing and toward 1Km up the summit the trail starts to get rocky. The summit would be a nice camping spot, there are benches, the ground is cemented and level, toilet facilities is the only thing that is lacking. The trail up the summit would take around 2.5~3hrs and 1.5hrs down. You will have to be an average hiker for this trip because of timing constrain, not many have reach the summit during this trip.

If you are planning one day hike, suggest GoLite, 1.5lts of water should do and bring along some trail food like peanuts, resins, banana or chocolate which will boost some energy. If you like some hot drinks at the summit, bring along an Alcohol Stove.
